My website started displaying ads yesterday from Google Adsense. I use to get annoyed when I visited a website popping crazy with ads. But, I will admit I was excited when I noticed ads gleaming on my website yesterday! I feel like a million bucks! I feel being an Adsense account owner and advertiser is a HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT.
I feel getting approved is not easy, and I am all the better a website owner because of wanting approval. I put a lot of effort into getting my website up and running so I might finally get approved. I am not sure what I did to gain acceptance, but I thought of how happy I am that I want to pass along the feeling and share how you can get ads going on your website too!
Set Up Account
First, you want to purchase a domain name for your website. I have my hosting account with Godaddy, but you may have a different hosting account. Even if you are using free blogging accounts such as WordPress.com or Blogger.com, you can purchase a domain from these platforms by upgrading your account with them.
- In other words, you do not have to purchase a domain name from the hosting site you currently own or operate. Companies are fine with transferring an existing or new domain name to a different hosting account. Domain names are not expensive and for the price of a burger and fries with a drink you can own your own domain name for an entire year. Sometimes, you can find a really good deal on domain names for as little as $1. Just FYI, you can own more than one domain name and/or hosting account at the same time. I have four!!!
- If you are just interested in setting up Adsense for a Youtube account, you will not need a domain name.
Next, you want to head over to Google Adsense and sign up for an account! Enter your information (i.e. name, address, phone number—you will need to verify phone through text code and enter that into the google page you use to sign up) and then just wait for Google to notify you know when you get approval. Some of the terms for getting approved varies and you may not get approval on the first try, but do not give up.
Dont do like I did and place code in the head section of your website and look for ads to show up before you get approval. I was thinking “what am I doing wrong?” I searched all over the web to see what I was missing, and I sort of give up trying to figure it out. I did not know I needed approval!!! I thought since I had an account with Adsense, I was good to go. But, your website is not going to show ads just from having an Adsense account and putting the code in your header.
To place the code in the header of your website, you want to tell Adsense (your account) what type of ads you want to run.
You have several options and you can run all the different types at the same time. You need at least one type checked. The next step is placing the code in the head section of your website. You can do this through implementing the code in your header.php file first and then select your “global settings (above image)”. Either way, the code needs to be in the head section of your website so Adsense can index your site to see if you have the necessary ingredients to display ads….and earn money with Google.
>>>>>An Interjection On Plugins
Hey, if you are not comfortable doing this yourself, ask someone to do it for you. But, I think you can do it. You can also refer to Google’s Guide on how to do all of this here. Plugins: I tried several plugins, but I want to mention one that can help make the next area easier if you are not comfortable placing code in a file on your website.
Easy Google Adsense allows you to simplify the process of injecting the Adsense code into your website by doing it for you. All you need to do is install the plugin, activate, and input your publisher id number and Easy Google Adsense does the rest for you. You can find your publisher ID number in the menu on your Adsense Account under Settings>Account>Account Information.
<<<Back to our regular scheduled program.
Once you select the types of ads you want to run on your site, just copy the code from your Adsense account and paste that code just BEFORE the closing </head> tag of your header.php file.
- You can find the header.php file in the dashboard>appearance>editor section of your Wordpress.
Time To Wait
Once you create your account, set up your global settings, and pasted the code in the head section of your website, all that is left to do is wait. Google indexes your site to see if your website is suitable for the types of Ads Google serves. Usually, you will get an email within 24 hours letting you know when your site is approved or disapproved for Adsense. Think of the approval email as an employer letting you know you got the position you applied for; its just that awesome.
So, you get approved and you plugin to set those ads you prefer to show up on your website and you feel good about what is going on with serving Google Ads on your website. Beware that Google reserves the right to revoke, deny, or even remove ads from your website if there is suspicion of spam, rude or inappropriate information, and other reasons. I found a good answer question video to cover some reasons Google may revoke or degrade Ads and service to websites that receiving approval.
Well thats all I have for now. I am just learning the process, and I know there is so much more that needs mentioning. I will continue to learn and grow in this area of website ownership, advertising, and earning money online.
